I have always admired the natural world, ever since a young child, you could not keep me inside for 5 minutes. My Father would take me bush-walking, reef walking and foraging every week, I would collect all kinds of plants, animals and flowers. You could say I was a child of the Earth, learning respect and love for the natural world around me and everything living in it. A few decades on nothing has changed.
I have a strong desire to help people and for many years now have seen the traditional medical system fail by treating the symptoms and rarely the cause. Friend’s family and I have been back and forth to doctors and hospitals with all sorts of conditions, only to be told a different prognosis every time, given a bunch of harmful drugs to mask the symptoms and ushered out the door.
In December 2012, I fell ill with what the doctor’s described as a “mystery virus”. I tried telling them how I was feeling and what my theories regarding my health were, only to be told I was “silly and a hypochondriac”.
7 months, countless blood tests, scans and referrals later, I was diagnosed with Chronic Sinusitis and received a short apology and many doctors later, received some respite in my condition by taking my recovery into my own hands with natural preventatives and diet change.
I started to research Natural medicine, with the mindset that thousands of years of success throughout all cultures on earth surely held strong significance. My theory quickly became that “we are from this planet so the cures of sickness should also come from this planet”. I loved the notion of being involved in therapies that treated the body as a whole, promoted wellbeing and focused on the underlying “cause” all without harmful chemical agents. Natural Medicine quickly became my number 1 career choice.
I have found that patients who use Natural Therapies are empowered to make a lot more choices concerning their health. To me this is very important, when it comes to your own health, you want to be or at least feel like you are in control.
Natural practitioners will also take the time to spend with a client, getting to know them and thoroughly assessing the overall wellbeing and history of the client. Nobody wants to feel like a number and developing trusting, caring relationships with clients is paramount to providing a complete service.
Another thing about Herbal/Natural medicine that appealed to me was that as a practitioner I do not have to sell out to the plethora of Pharmaceutical companies that provide medical products. As a herbalist I can source quality, fresh ingredients and tailor medication to the individual. I am a firm believer about Big Pharmaceutical companies making trillions of dollars off the sick population and how important it is to them that they remain “sick”.
